A message from the Executive Head
Dear Parents and Guardians

Our first week in lockdown....again!

A huge well done to you, our parents, for adapting your work schedules and daily routines to support your children in their home learning. Thank you also for the many comments of support and encouragement you have given us. Your feedback enables us to consolidate what we do well and supports us in understanding what we can do better.

Another ‘well done’ goes to your children. Is remote education the way we would want them to learn? No. Is this current platform the best available? I believe so. And while we are monitoring very closely the pastoral elements of your children at work, we must also take comfort in the knowledge that they are developing skills of independence, resilience and the application of IT to numerous academic situations.

Finally, a huge thank you to our staff. On average, an online lesson takes two and a half times longer to prepare than a face to face lesson, not including the challenges of giving effective and meaningful feedback to children over a screen. Our Nursery staff and pupils are bravely in school, as are our Key Worker children, vulnerable children and their staff. We are truly blessed with some of the most talented and dedicated staff I have ever had the privilege of working with, and the nurture your children receive, from three years to 18 years old, is in my opinion, second to none.

My last words to you are in regard to support. We are here not just for your children, but for you as families too. Please keep in contact with us whenever you need us, there is always someone waiting at the end of a phone or at the end of a computer. Please tell us if you or your family are struggling, please inform us if you have concerns of an academic, pastoral or covid nature….and most importantly, please understand that you are not alone in facing this lockdown.

Thank you for your support, and please stay safe

Best wishes

Justin Spanswick
Executive Head Teacher

Support and resources from Everlief
Our partners in clinical and educational health, Everlief, have developed a brand new parent support site, which is now live at https://www.theyarethefuture.co.uk/

The website holds articles on a wide range of mental health issues, including a free three day mini course: "Reset Your Child's Wellbeing in 2021"

This is for parents of children with stress, anger or anxiety.

Dr Lucy Russell, from Everlief, said: “We look at three fundamental areas of children's wellbeing. When parents sign up they receive an email each day for three days. Each email will link to a video and a PDF, to guide you through the mini course.”

Expectations of Sixth Form students for remote learning
As we are all now back into lockdown, this seemed a good time to remind parents of what we in Sixth Form expect from students during this time, and to let you know more about when assemblies and briefings happen for them.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, there will be briefings or assemblies at 8.45am with Mrs Rogers and Mr Hope. All students are expected to attend as maintaining a sense of community and connectedness is our priority; also, important information will be communicated at these times and a register will be taken. You will be contacted if any student misses one of these sessions.

On Tuesday and Thursday, Form Tutors will hold a 'pop up' meeting from 8.45am for students to attend should they wish to have any questions answered or just want a chat. Attendance is optional.

PSHEE lessons with tutors will be on as per their normal timetable each week and students are expected to attend this lesson. Year 12s are focusing on the variety of post 18 options including university, apprenticeships and employment. Year 13s are working on personal skills, topical issues and preparation for independent living, The Inter Form Quiz, always a keenly contested (and fun) competition continues each week too.

Attendance for lessons remains as normal and as always 100% attendance is the expectation. Please email kyh@clairescourt.net if a student is unable to attend the lesson through illness or because of an appointment. If a student is absent, parents will be contacted to ascertain the reason.

Drug awareness talk
There will be a virtual drugs awareness talk on Tuesday 19 January 2021 from 7pm to 8pm.

This will be open to all our parents of all students. The presenter for the evening will be Elizabeth Burton–Phillips Founder, DrugFAM - more information is available on their web site. Some of the topics covered will include:  issues connected with specific illicit drugs and legal substance misuse, knowledge of the short and long term consequences of misuse (addiction and dependency), updating parental knowledge on current trends and signs and symptoms of drug use. She will also address the topic of ‘Dealing Drugs to Children in the Age of Social Media’.

You can join the talk using this MEET link, but may we kindly ask that you turn both your mic and camera off prior to joining.
