‘Mission impossible’ was played this afternoon by Taimoor-Ali in our celebration assembly and it is the perfect link to start my words. New experiences can be challenging and tackling change can be daunting. However, we always welcome...

A message from the Executive Head
Dear Parents and Guardians

I am becoming known as the Grinch! As the school prepares for its run towards the end of term, I find myself curtailing many of our Claires Court much-loved Christmas traditions, much to mine and everyone's dismay, due to Covid-19 safety restrictions in place from the Department for Education (DfE). However, we will celebrate Christmas and ensure our children do not miss out on some fun. We are also ensuring, such is the uncertainty of when a next lockdown might loom, that our children are working hard all the way up to 4pm on the last day of term (Wednesday 16 December). Lots of fun, yes. Lots of learning, yes!

Next week I’ll write to you about our provision for your children as we move into the Lent term. This will include alterations to timings of the end of day bus service, changes to the after school activities, and information on subject specific areas like Music and Sport.

I will also be writing to you about university students returning home. We have a number of families who will be welcoming back their older sons and daughters from universities soon, with much delight and relief I am sure, and we will be supporting you in preventing the spread of the virus and following the guidance to keep everyone safe.

One final reminder please - if anyone in your family bubble/household is waiting for the outcome of a Covid-19 test, you must all isolate until the results are sent through. The guidance can sometimes be misinterpreted and confusing, so I wanted to confirm this for the many of you who have asked. Thank you for your patience and for supporting us in our endeavours to remain as safe a school environment as we possibly can.

Have a lovely weekend.

Executive Head Teacher

ISA Art Competition 2020
With our ISA region being London West, Junior Boys have another 55 ISA schools to compete with on the Art front. Hailing from London to Southampton there are always many fantastic works of art over the different categories and age ranges entered into the hotly contested competition. We are very proud to say that three of our boys won the categories they were entered into. Our Seniors also scooped four wins! An impressive tally of seven wins over our sites. These boys’ work will now be entered into the National ISA Art Competition. It seems the judges liked the drawings the boys produced as we won both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Well done to all the boys who produce impressive art work each week. We are impressed with how you enjoy and take pride in your work. Please click here to find out who won.

Key Stage 1 artist of the week
Vivaan Bohra (1S) worked towards creating an excellent observational drawing of a peg.

Key Stage 2 artist of the week
Y4 have been working on a group project looking at the work of Keith Haring. We will keep you posted with their progress.

Rabbit awards
Awarded for kindness, helpfulness and compassion doing the right thing without being asked, it is what makes our school a wonderful environment. This week our rabbits have been awarded to Hugo De Jager.

From the Chess Master
It’s always good to see chess being advertised on the news in a positive light, and I was not surprised to hear that there has been a sharp uptake in the game during the lockdown period, with more and more turning back to board games. Online platforms such as lichess.org, chess.com and chess24.com have seen a surge in membership, which is free, as people look to take the game further and develop their skills. Online tournaments can be joined through these platforms, so it is always worth having an account. I am a big fan of solving puzzles on these sites; why not have a go? Try going over some puzzles and games with your son and see who comes out on top!

Over the board chess has taken a hit owing to strict Covid restrictions, but there are a few tournaments out there. One such tournament is being planned at the Cheney School near Headington on Sunday 10 January 2021. Anyone interested should contact the organiser, Joseph Conlon on joseph.p.conlon@googlemail.com. Joseph, an excellent Berkshire player and candidate master, has helped with our Claires Court events in the past.

Please do drop me an email rih@clairescourt.net to let me know what your son is up to with his chess - whether it is playing at home, online or in tournaments. Any photographs would also be greatly appreciated, I have another chess noticeboard I would like to fill.
