| | | News from the Sports Master
On Saturday 28 September Claires Court Junior Boys hosted the annual U9 Rugby Festival. We welcomed A&B teams from Gayhurst, St George's Weybridge, Chesham Prep, Oratory Prep School, Berkhamsted and Winchester House for a morning of excellent rugby. We ran two separate A and B team festivals with all teams playing each other. The emphasis of festival rugby is very much on all pupils enjoying sport and learning from the experience, this certainly took place! The two Claires Court teams showed just how far they have come in a very short space of time since the start of term, playing some fantastic attacking rugby while being fearless in defence. Both of our teams enjoyed a very successful morning winning five out of six matches played. Mr Barber and Mr Butterfield are very proud of the way all the pupils conducted themselves through the morning and look forward to the rest of the season ahead.
In our regular fixtures on Tuesday, sadly all U9 matches and festival were lost to freak thunderstorms. The weather was much kinder on Wednesday when we hosted OPS U10 teams. OPS proved to be very strong and it was a difficult afternoon in terms of results. However, all pupils showed great resilience and never let negativity set in - a very important attribute! Our U11 teams travelled to Gayhurst for triangular fixtures against Gayhurst and Chesham Prep. This proved to be a very successful afternoon and special mention must go to the U11A team who ran in 13 tries over the two matches.
News from the Chess Master
Napoleon once said "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."
But what if they're not making any mistakes?
The answer: encourage them to do so.
On Wednesday, I was sitting with a group of young chess players introducing the "weapons" of chess: the pin, the fork, the skewer and the surprise or discovered attack. These are the tools of chess player's trade and the better a player knows them the more likely he will be to overpower an otherwise faultless opponent. Try clicking on the lichess links for each and encourage your son to go through the exercises.
Just another reminder that the 19th PTA Chess Festival is on Saturday 16 November. This tournament offers a route for qualification for the London Nationals and is well attended with competitors coming from around the country, though Claires Court boys have a very good track record in the competition.
Entry forms can be found on the Chess noticeboard or through the Maidenhead Junior Chess Club website.
Lessons with Mr Tuck for next year
If your son is in Years 2 to 5 and is interested in having chess lessons with Mr Tuck next year (and is not already enjoying this privilege) please contact me on rih@clairescourt.net as I am now putting together the plan for next September.
These lessons are an excellent chance for your son to not only improve his chess, but to also strengthen his logic and processing skills at the same time. |
