Summer Reading Challenge 2019
Thank you to all the boys who took part in the Bingo Reading Challenge this summer. The challenge was designed to encourage reading over the summer break and to inspire boys to try new authors and it's clear from the entries that it succeeded in this aim. The quality of the entries was high, making my job of choosing some winners very difficult. Congratulations to the winning boys who managed to complete all of the challenges and submitted some impressive pieces of work. - Mrs Flood

Rugby Squads raring to go after Pre Season TourRugby Squads raring to go after Pre Season Tour

With the start of the new school rugby season just around the corner, fifty five boys from the U14 and U15 Rugby teams were put through their paces during a pre season tour in Cardiff.
News from the Sports Master
I firstly wanted to thank all of you who turned out to help support the Sports Department of the Junior Boys and the Junior Girls in our fundraising event last Friday. It was a very enjoyable evening and the money raised will go to support our many sports tours and outward bound activities.

Before the event took place our Year 5 pupils had their first competitive fixture against St John’s Beaumont. With the weather more suited to cricket and the ground rock hard and unsafe to play contact rugby, matches had to be played as touch rugby. While not all the results went our way, the afternoon gave our students an excellent opportunity to improve their handling skills in a competitive environment.

With the hot and dry weather continuing on into this week the Year 4 teams also played their first ever fixtures as touch matches; this time against Davenies. The change in rules did not faze our Year 4 pupils as all 5 teams came away from the afternoon unbeaten with wins for the U9A,B&D teams and draws for our U9C&E teams.

Sadly our U11 teams did not get to play their matches on Wednesday as St George’s Weybridge decided that they did not want to travel to play touch rugby. The U11 teams spent the afternoon playing internal games against each other which proved excellent experience for them.

Next weeks fixtures are as follows-

Tue 24 Sept
U9A&B,  v The Beacon (Home)
U9C,D&E v The Beacon (Away)

Wed 25 Sept
U11B,C,D&E v The Beacon (Home)
U11A Haileybury Rugby Festival @ Allianz Park 5.45pm-7.00pm

Fri 27 Sept
U10A,B,C, v Davenies (Away)

Sat 28 Sept

News from the Chess Master
With the commencement of activities this week we saw the return of Chess at CCJB.
We have a vast number of boys taking part in our two clubs on Monday and Wednesday, which bodes well for the future.

I spoke to the boys at both sessions about using lichess.org to improve their chess (regardless of how strong players are). Regular practise will see your son improve.

Beginners should work their way through this link, whilst slightly stronger players should focus on these practice situations.
There are some tricky puzzles too!

Within the local chess community our links with Maidenhead Junior Chess Club continue to be strong and a number of tournaments designed for Juniors of varying strengths can be found by clicking on the link below:

Our 19th PTA Chess Festival fast approaches on Saturday 16 November. This tournament offers a route for qualification for the London Nationals and is well attended with competitors coming from around the country, though Claires Court boys have a very good track record in the competition.
Entry forms can be found on the Chess noticeboard or through the Maidenhead Junior Chess Club website.
