Dr Alex Lord from Broadmoor Hospital
On Tuesday, some Year 12 students had a fascinating talk by Dr Alex Lord, Forensic Psychologist at Broadmoor Hospital.  Dr Lord works with individuals who have complex health and offending needs and believes CBT and relapse prevention is a particularly effective approach to psychological rehabilitation and risk reduction.
Dr Lord described in detail the various career options and paths into becoming a Psychologist - Clinical, Forensic and Sports Psychology seemed to be the most interesting to the group.  Dr Lord explained the necessary requirements for each area of Psychology and stressed the importance of personal commitment.
Anoushka Hawkes commented on how much she enjoyed listening to Dr Lord talking about his work in the hospital as he shared some of the cases he had encountered. Holly West also found it interesting to hear the inside story of Broadmoor as she had recently enjoyed watching a TV programme about the hospital. The students found it hugely insightful to listen to all elements of Dr Lord’s work within Broadmoor and how they could pursue their interest in Psychology as a potential career.

Discovery Day — learn about BP's School Leaver Programme
Join BP at their London office for a Discovery Day, where you'll get an insight into BP's business and the opportunities they have on offer for school leavers. This Supply & Trading Discovery Day is designed for Year 13 students who are expected to achieve 128 UCAS points from three A-levels or equivalent.
It is on Tuesday 23 October at BP's offices in Canary Wharf, London.
You will learn about BP's Supply and Trading strategy, the exciting challenges involved and different work streams. You'll walk the trading floor and get a chance to play BP's Commodities Trading Game - plus you'll hear from school leavers who already work for BP. You will also be able to apply for the Supply and Trading School Leaver Programme which is a five-year structured training and development programme with four job rotations in front office roles. Successful applicants have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of commercial activities in the oil, gas and shipping sectors such as:
  • Analysing market data.
  • Working with product control.
  • Supporting operations team on a trading bench.
  • Working with the derivatives marketing team.
  • Supporting commercial trading as part of a financial team.
The application form is fairly straight forward; just fill out your education and personal details. You can apply here. If you've done work experience before, it's great to add that, but don't worry if you haven't. If you're expected to achieve 128 UCAS points and have an interest in business, BP want to hear from you!

Suzanne Knowles from Alexander Devine
Suzanne came to speak to the Sixth Form in assembly about her work with the Alexander Devine children’s hospice. This has really spurred the students on to want to help the charity make a difference by taking part in the Santa Dash in Windsor on Sunday 25th November at 9am. They can run/jog/dance for 5km through Windsor dressed as Santa to help the hospice. Sponsorship forms are available from their website at www.alexanderdevine.org.
