Early Buses

Visiting speaker – Nicola Bell from Rahab
Nicola Bell, from the Reading, Windsor and Maidenhead based charity Rahab, came in to speak to a group of Year 12 students about the variety of types of exploitation taking place on our own doorstep. The students were suprised to hear that the people working in local nail bars and car washes are often victims of exploitation.
One of the group asked how much it would cost to buy a person and how would you even begin to do so. The value of a human being is currently £45! The dark web is used by gangs to buy and sell people and the human trafficking industry generates a staggering $151 billion.
Other statistics discussed revealed the UK is the 3rd most prevalent trafficking nation; indirectly this is a positive thing as it suggests the problem is being identified and tackled. Whilst finding evidence to convict traffickers is incredibly difficult those caught are often imprisoned on related charges including tax avoidance, so are taken out of the community.
Nicola also relayed a number of case studies about young people trafficked into and around the UK and explained there was a growing number of young people being trafficked out of the UK too.
The students found some of the stories very hard-hitting, but credit to them, a number of them want to volunteer to help with the charity in some capacity soon.
