News from the Chess Master
Our first week back has seen a vast number of younger boys join our chess club, which is wonderful as these boys will make up the school teams of the future. On Monday I introduced these new boys to chess basics whilst Mr Dennis and Mrs Sullivan were with the older pupils. We learned about how some of the pieces move and then the boys solved some problems using these pieces. Chess is a game entirely centred on problem solving, and he (or she) who can problem-solve best will invariably win; but before one can do this the movement of the pieces must first be mastered! On Wednesday I was delighted to introduce the boys to chess sets from South America (brought in by Mrs Grundy) depicting the fight between the Conquistadors and the Incas.
The 17th Claires Court PTA Chess Festival - An entry form for the Chess Festival can be downloaded here. Entries have already started coming in!
Berkshire County Trials - If you would like to try out for the Berkshire team we are hosting the trials here on Saturday 7 October. Entry form.
Rabbit Winners
Rabbit winners this week are Louis Fewkes (Year 5) and Joshua Hoad (Yr 3). Both boys have been very helpful, kind and polite this week, and a number of teachers have commented on some of the selfless acts they have done over the past few days. We are very proud of them. |
